Sony Offers PS5 Trade-Ins Through Back Market as Console Prices Climb
Sony is nudging PS5 owners to trade in old consoles via Back Market for up to $400, as price hikes and a VRAM crunch squeeze hardware, says Polygon.
Sony is reaching out to some PS5 owners with a trade-in offer through the refurbished-electronics marketplace Back Market, according to Polygon. The push arrives while console prices keep rising and the supply picture looks grim. For anyone planning a hardware upgrade, or just wondering whether consoles will ever get cheaper again, it is a telling signal.
What Sony is offering
Per Polygon, some PS5 owners have started receiving notifications directly from Sony about a new partnership with Back Market. The company describes itself as a voice against 'fast tech' and runs a marketplace for refurbished devices.
Sony says current owners can get up to $400 for an old console on Back Market. There are conditions: the hardware must be in good shape, and the seller has to include two controllers. Polygon notes that this beats what competitors such as GameStop offer.
Why the timing matters
Polygon points to a difficult hardware market. The PS5 has gone through two major price hikes, and the Xbox Series X has gone up three times in a single year. The report ties this to an AI-driven VRAM crisis that is expected to get worse, leaving Sony with limited room to sell consoles at prices buyers will accept.
The publication stops short of calling the trade-in program a direct response, but says the timing does not look like a coincidence.
Is $400 actually a good deal?
That depends on who you are. Polygon says used or refurbished PS5s currently sell for somewhere between $600 and $1,300. Against that range, a $400 payout may not look appealing to most people.
The offer may work best for players who were going to upgrade regardless. According to Polygon, that group is growing as the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 gets closer. Note that all the figures in the report are in US dollars, and it does not say whether the offer applies in India.
Xbox is making a similar move
Sony is not alone. Polygon reports that Xbox has spent part of 2026 encouraging fans to trade in consoles for cash. Microsoft presents it as a practical choice for people who are not using their consoles, which Polygon reads as an unintended admission that Xbox's pitch has been weaker this generation.
More recently, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said demand for Xbox consoles has outstripped supply, and suggested expanding Xbox's refurbishment program to ease the problem. Polygon says many people met that claim with skepticism.
What to watch next
Both trade-in programs line up with the holiday season and the approach of GTA 6, two moments when console demand tends to spike. Whether they pull enough used hardware back into circulation is still unclear.
Polygon also flags two factors that could make people hold on to their current consoles: the rumored, very high price of the PlayStation 6, and the sudden surge of interest around the PS5 jailbreak. Keep an eye on whether Sony widens the Back Market offer, and whether any further price changes follow. For Indian players and cafe owners watching hardware costs, the global trend is the one to track.
